Born and raised in southwestern Ohio, Shawn attended Wright State University in Fairborn, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications and a Master of Education in English Education. He subsequently earned his certification in project management (CPM) from Xavier University in Cincinnati. During college, he supported himself and paid for his education as a disc jockey, a musician, a freight handler, and a beat reporter.

After college, Shawn was a middle and high school English teacher, a radio DJ, and a corporate trainer. In 2014, he and his family moved to Missoula, Montana, so he could become a full-time writer, editor, and producer.
